"For you will have poor always. . ."

We believe Jesus said the words above for two reasons. One is to emphasize the fallen state of the world; and two, to let us know that we’ll all have opportunity to serve those less fortunate than ourselves. For He wants us to “look after widows and orphans in their distress. . .” (James 1:27). There are many widows and orphans here in Malawi, the fourth poorest country in the world. And now due to heavy rains and what seem to be government inefficiencies there is a shortage of maize, the most important food source here. In spite of these hardships most Malawians persevere with a quiet, even cheerful, dignity; like the wood haulers who tote impossibly high stacks of wood on their bikes; or the children who offer a taste of sugar cane.
