The Real Pearls of Africa
March 2010 (PDF:220k)

When Winston Churchill visited Uganda in 1907 he christened the land locked British protectorate, “the pearl of Africa.” It is believed that he was primarily reflecting on the beauty of the natural world he witnessed in this corner of God’s creation. Ours has been a limited glimpse of the diverse landscape and wildlife in this country, which I imagine was remarkably pristine 100 years ago. However the “pearl” which Churchill describes is very different from the gems we’ve been blessed to look upon over the past few years.
